Description
Camparo Barolo DOCG
Camparo di Mauro Drocco began in 1980 when Mauro Drocco decided to make wine from a handful of vineyards left to him by his father, just east of the town of Barolo in Piedmont. He had played among those rows as a child, and the idea of farming the land with chemicals was, from the very beginning, unthinkable. Mauro built the estate slowly, rejecting conventional winemaking methods and experimenting with ecological and organic techniques. In 2000, Camparo was among the first estates in the Barolo zone to receive full organic certification. Today the family’s south and south-east facing slopes provide ideal conditions for the slow, even ripening that Nebbiolo demands.
In the cellar, the approach is unhurried and traditional. Grapes are hand-harvested in October and fermentation is slow and natural, lasting up to four weeks. The wine is then aged in large neutral oak barrels before extended bottle ageing prior to release. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is forced. 2017 was a warm, dry vintage across the Langhe — a year that tested producers but rewarded those with old vines and patience. The result in the glass is a Barolo of surprising freshness, generous fruit, and genuine character.
A dark, deep ruby red in the glass, the 2017 Camparo opens with an expressive nose of leather, wet earth, underbrush, and wild dark berries, alongside notes of coffee, violet, and sweet tobacco. On the palate the wine is medium to full bodied with a ripe, dark, and spicy fruit core supported by rich, firm tannins and vibrant acidity. Rose-scented red berry fruit and coffee carry through to a long, persistent finish with a lingering touch of sweet tobacco and dried herbs.
