Crown Royal Blackberry Whisky
History
In 1939, Crown Royal was created by Canadian spirits entrepreneur Samuel Bronfman as a royal tribute to welcome King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on their historic first visit to Canada. After experimenting with over 600 blends, Bronfman crafted a remarkably smooth whisky composed of approximately 50 individual whiskies, packaged in a cut‑glass decanter and wrapped in a regal purple velvet bag embroidered with gold stitching. These bottles were presented aboard the Royal train, with ten cases reserved for the royal couple, while rumors of the “whisky fit for a King” quickly spread across Canada.
Initially, Crown Royal was exclusive to Canadian markets—only in the 1960s did it begin its expansion into the United States and other international territories. Since then, it has grown into the top-selling Canadian whisky abroad, cementing its legacy globally.
Production of Crown Royal occurs exclusively at the Crown Royal distillery in Gimli, Manitoba, located on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg. The distillery’s pristine water, naturally filtered through limestone, and locally sourced grains (rye, corn, barley) contribute to the brand’s hallmark smoothness and consistency. Once distilled and aged in oak barrels, the whisky is blended—combining roughly fifty whiskies—and then bottled in Amherstburg, Ontario, ensuring the signature flavor profile remains consistent year after year.
From its inception, Crown Royal’s packaging—especially the royal purple velvet bag—has been a crucial part of its identity, creating an aura of luxury and heritage. This design has become iconic and continues to reinforce the brand’s royal heritage in the global spirits market.
Even today, Crown Royal remains committed to the same principles of craftsmanship and tradition that defined its founding. Each bottle is crafted with the same high standards envisioned for its original royal recipients, delivering the smooth, refined character that has come to represent Canadian whisky excellence.
Whisky-Making Process
The production of Crown Royal begins with high-quality grains — predominantly corn, rye, and barley — sourced mostly from Manitoba and neighbouring districts, which together account for about 80% of their raw ingredients. These grains are chosen for their hardiness in harsh Canadian climates.
Using five distinct mash bills and twelve distillation columns, Crown Royal produces up to five unique whiskey styles. Each style undergoes a controlled aging process in a mix of new and reused charred oak barrels. The dramatic temperature shifts in the warehouse—from warm to freezing—cause the wood to breathe, extracting rich flavors over time.
When each whisky reaches optimal maturity, master blenders assemble about fifty individual whiskies to maintain consistent complexity and smoothness across the brand’s expressions. This blending is performed with precision to achieve the signature Crown Royal profile
