Description
Ilegal Mezcal Joven
Ilegal Mezcal began in 2004 when founder John Rexer started smuggling small batches of artisanal mezcal from Oaxaca, Mexico into Antigua, Guatemala to serve at his bar, Café No Sé. The name “Ilegal” reflects those rebellious beginnings. By 2006, the project grew into a formal brand, built on partnerships with Oaxacan mezcaleros who use traditional methods such as roasting agave in earthen pits and distilling in small copper stills. Beyond producing authentic mezcal, Ilegal has remained committed to supporting local communities, creating sustainable jobs, and preserving artisanal practices. What started as a barroom experiment has since grown into an internationally recognized brand, while still honoring its roots in Oaxaca and its spirit of independence.
Ilegal Mezcal Joven is an un-aged Espadín mezcal that offers a fresh and approachable profile. On the nose, it shows bright notes of eucalyptus, green apple, and citrus with a touch of mineral and light smoke. The palate is clean and agave-forward, balancing subtle sweetness with hints of grapefruit, tangerine, and a gentle vegetal character, all wrapped in a soft smokiness. The finish lingers with warmth, mineral tones, and a touch of peppery spice. Smooth and versatile, it works equally well for sipping neat or as a flavorful base in cocktails.
