Description
Red Spot Single Pot Stilled 15 Year Old Irish Whiskey
In 1805, the Mitchell merchant family commenced trading on 10 Grafton street, in the heart of Dublin city as purveyors of confectionary, wines and fortified wines. In 1887, the entrepreneurial family expanded into the whiskey bonding business, whereby they sent empty wine, sherry and port casks via horse and cart to the local Jameson Distillery. These were filled and returned to the Mitchell’s cellar warehouse on Fitzwilliam lane. There, beneath the cobbled streets, the whiskey matured for many years until they were ready to be bottled and sold. The Mitchell’s sold a range of whiskeys under their “spot” brand name. This rather peculiar name originated from their practice of marking casks of different ages with a daub or spot of colluded paint. There was a blue spot, red spot and even a yellow spot, but the green spot emerged as their most popular whiskey and is one of the few “whiskey bonder brands” to have survived to modern day.
Crafted from an old recipe handed down by the Mitchell & Son family of wine merchants, with records dating back to the early 1900s, the reimagined Red Spot is a triple-distilled, single pot still Irish whiskey that has been matured for a minimum of 15 years in a combination of casks pre-seasoned with bourbon, Oloroso sherry and Marsala fortified wine. This highly-anticipated release delivers a full-bodied, complex and characterful flavor, worthy of its colorful past.
Red Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey is matured for over 15 years in a combination of American bourbon casks, Spanish sherry butts, and Sicilian Marsala wine casks, creating a rich and complex character that sets it at the top of the range. On the nose, it opens with classic pot still spices alongside layers of cooked fruit, baked apple, mango, and black cherry, complemented by hazelnut, new leather, and toasted American oak. The palate reveals ripe fruit sweetness from the Marsala wine casks, balanced by sweet red pepper, cracked black pepper, and notes of oak and barley. The finish is exceptionally long, leaving a lasting impression of intertwined fruits and warming spices.
