Willett Distillery was established in 1936 by Thompson Willett, but the family’s whiskey legacy began long before. Thanks to his father and grandfather, Thompson held a deep knowledge and respect for the craftsmanship involved in making fine whiskeys: Use the best ingredients available, pay close attention to the details – then take a step back and give the whiskey time and space to develop character. It’s a simple approach, but it seems to be working.
Mimicking the flavor profile of a historic Maryland rye whiskey style, Willett Family Estate Rye is a combination of two rye mash bills commingled together to achieve a balance of fruit and spice and bottled at cask strength.
Willett Family Estate 4 Year Small Batch Rye opens with aromas of caramel, vanilla, baking spices, and hints of citrus and herbal rye. The palate is bold and oily, mixing sweet notes of brown sugar, toffee, and dark cherry with classic rye elements like black pepper, cardamom, mint, and fennel, all supported by touches of oak, char, and cedar. The finish is medium-long, carrying forward the caramel and chocolate tones alongside lingering spice, oak tannin, and a subtle menthol edge, creating a youthful but surprisingly layered rye experience.
