Description
Isle Saint-Pierre Rosé
Domaine Isle Saint-Pierre sits on a small island in the Rhône River, just south of Arles and close enough to the Mediterranean to feel its influence. Founded in 1927 by Parisian wine merchant Pierre Chassaing, the estate was originally devoted to both vines and sheep farming, and a flock still roams the property today, providing natural manure for the vineyard. The estate is now farmed by fourth generation vigneron Julien Henry, who tends the vines sustainably and was recognized in 2018 with France’s Vignerons Développement Durable certification for that commitment.
The island’s proximity to water gives the vineyards a cooling coastal influence, while deep, well draining sand and silt soils allow the vines to develop resilient root systems that carry them through the region’s dry summers. This combination of climate and soil lets Julien grow varieties more commonly associated with cooler, continental climates. For the rosé, grapes are harvested early and cooled quickly upon arrival at the cellar, then undergo a short, carefully timed skin maceration using exclusively free run juice, a gentle approach designed to preserve freshness and aromatic lift.
