Description
Benzinger West Rows Chardonnay
The West Rows vineyard sites sit near Sonoma Creek, where loamy soil sets them apart from the clay-heavy ground found across most of Los Carneros. Positioned in southern Sonoma just above the reach of harsh Pacific winds, this location occupies something of a sweet spot within the Los Carneros AVA. The vines here are Wente Clone Chardonnay, a selection known for producing “hens and chicks” clusters, bunches made up of both large and small berries growing together. That natural size variation concentrates flavor within the fruit, building extra richness and depth. Grapes are picked by hand in the early morning to lock in freshness and delicate flavor, then whole cluster pressed right away and fermented in barrels made of French and Hungarian oak. The wine rests on its lees until bottling, with regular stirring every two weeks to develop a fuller body and rounder texture.
