Description
Bisci Verdicchio di Matelica D.O.C.
High in the Apennine mountains of the Marche region in central Italy, Bisci is widely regarded as one of the finest estates in the Verdicchio di Matelica denomination. Brothers Giuseppe and Pierino Bisci first purchased their vineyards in 1972, recognizing the land’s exceptional potential for Verdicchio. Today the estate farms 25 hectares, with 18 devoted entirely to Verdicchio — making it the undisputed focus of everything they do. As The Wine Advocate has noted, Verdicchio is one of the great joys of Italian winemaking, and few producers do it better than Bisci. The 2024 vintage was awarded the prestigious Gambero Rosso “Bere Bene” award, recognizing outstanding quality and value, a fitting tribute to a winery that consistently punches well above its price point.
The Vintage
2024 was a sunny and characterful year in the Marche, with warm days and cool, dry nights giving the grapes exceptional aromatic intensity and fine fragrance. The vintage successfully balanced the natural verve and mineral intensity of Matelica with a sunny, fruit-forward personality, resulting in wines of great freshness and attractive complexity.
Vineyard & Terroir
100% Verdicchio sourced exclusively from estate-owned vineyards. South-facing plots sit at elevations of 300–350 meters above sea level in a valley running parallel to the Adriatic coast, providing natural protection from hail and frost while creating a more continental microclimate than the surrounding environment. Calcareous clay soils with excellent drainage encourage deep root growth and mineral expression. The alternation of hot sunny days and cool dry nights is the signature of this unique terroir. All vineyards are certified organic.
Winemaking
Grapes are carefully harvested and fermented in glazed cement vats at cool temperatures to protect and preserve the wine’s aromatic compounds. The wine then ages on the lees in cement for 8 months before bottling, a process that allows slow micro-oxygenation while adding texture and depth without imparting any additional flavor characteristics.
