Bully Hill Vineyards traces its roots to 1880, when Walter Taylor founded the Taylor Wine Company in the Finger Lakes region, eventually growing it into the largest winery on the East Coast. Nearly a century later, his grandson Walter S. Taylor started fresh on the same hillside, formally incorporating Bully Hill in 1970 with a back-to-basics philosophy centered on estate-grown French American hybrid grapes. Walter also became known for his hand-illustrated, artistically irreverent wine labels, most famously the Love My Goat series, born out of trademark disputes over the Taylor name. After a devastating car accident left Walter a quadriplegic in 1990, his wife Lillian took the helm, transforming the winery into a thriving destination with a restaurant, tasting room, wine museum, and gift shops, while growing production to over 230,000 cases annually distributed across more than twenty states.
Looking ahead, Bully Hill remains committed to sustainability and innovation through its partnership with Cornell University’s AgriTech program, focused on developing disease-resistant, ecologically sound grape varieties suited to the region. The winery also invests in the next generation of winemakers through its support of the Finger Lakes Community College Viticulture and Wine Center. Throughout its evolution, Bully Hill has stayed true to its founding spirit, offering premium quality wines at accessible prices while proudly maintaining its identity as one of New York State’s largest family-owned wineries.
The Winery
Bully Hill has cultivated grapes since 1880, but its modern identity took shape in 1958 when Walter S. Taylor and his father Greyton H. Taylor began replacing Native American vines with French American Hybrids, varieties they believed were better suited to the East Coast’s cold climate and more disease-resistant and vigorous than European vines. By 1970, the vineyard had been largely replanted, setting Bully Hill apart from neighboring wineries that favored Labrusca or vinifera grapes. Though many were skeptical at the time, the winery’s commitment to hybrids has proven both its quality and its practical advantages in terms of economic and ecological sustainability.
A key partner in Bully Hill’s hybrid-focused mission is Cornell University, whose renowned grape breeding program has supplied the winery with standout varieties like Traminette, Cayuga White, Noiret, and Geneva Red. Cornell Agritech continues to play an active role in the region’s wine industry, and its collaboration with Bully Hill helps position the winery as one of the most forward-thinking in the country. Across nearly 90 contiguous acres, Bully Hill remains fully dedicated to hybrid viticulture, a legacy that has grown from a bold experiment into a defining pillar of its identity.
The Wine
Love My Goat Red is a Bully Hill classic that delivers a unique, mellow, and easy-drinking experience with subtle fruit and a soft finish. At 11% alcohol and a residual sugar of 3.0, it strikes a pleasantly dry balance that pairs beautifully with an impressive range of dishes, from chicken fajitas and lasagna to roasted duck, barbecue ribs, and even blueberry pie. Behind the bottle is one of Bully Hill’s most storied labels: after losing a lawsuit that prevented Walter from using the Taylor name on his wines, he was reminded not to “let them get his goat.” He painted the now-iconic orange goat label in 1978, and the wine made its debut in 1980, going on to become the winery’s bestseller and a beloved symbol of Walter’s defiant, free-spirited character.
