Description
Chateau Philippe Le Hardi Chardonnay
Château Philippe le Hardi (formerly Château de Santenay) was once the majestic stately home of the first Duke of Burgundy. This historic estate is one of Burgundy’s most prestigious producers with its colorful glazed roof tiles. The estate began its organic conversion in 2021 across its 100 hectares of owned vineyards and has been certified since the summer of 2024. The 2024 vintage is the first produced under organic farming. Working in a very natural way, they farm their 200+ acres of vineyards throughout the Côte d’Or and Côte Chalonnaise. Their wines are distinctive and reflect the delicate complexities of each unique vineyard site.
The vineyard spans 11.40 hectares with southeast and southwest exposures at an altitude of 350 meters. Planted between 1990 and 1992, this steeply sloped parcel in the commune of Saint-Aubin is rooted in very stony limestone soils. Vines are planted at a density of 9,000 per hectare, with soil cultivation managed through autumn harrowing and light summer ploughing to clear flora from the vine rows. The wine undergoes both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrels and is aged for 12 months in oak, including 15% new barrels.
The great thing about this vintage, despite unstable weather conditions over the summer, the end result is stunning. The Chardonnay, Aligoté and Sauvignon grapes reached full maturity in perfect condition, while retaining enough freshness to live up to the reputation of Bourgogne white wines. A warm, sunny end to the season enabled the grapes to reach optimum ripeness, producing wines with intense aromas of ripe yellow fruit (such as peach and apricot), occasionally accented by notes of dried fruits and gentle spices. These wines are full-bodied and expansive, marked by undeniable freshness and impressive length on the palate. The 2023 vintage is sure to delight even the most discerning wine connoisseurs.
