Description
Groth Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon
Groth Vineyards & Winery calls the heart of Oakville home, a breathtakingly beautiful stretch of Napa Valley framed by the Mayacamas Mountains to the west and the Vaca Range to the east. With hope and intuition, the Groth family helped establish the Oakville AVA alongside their esteemed neighbors, and the appellation has since earned recognition as one of the world’s preeminent wine regions.
The 2022 vintage told a tale of two harvests. A cooler-than-average growing season gave way to a significant heat spell shortly after picking began in late August, sending vineyard and cellar teams into overdrive. Milder conditions returned by mid-September just as the first Cabernet lots arrived at the winery, and the fruit came through unscathed. Sourced from Groth’s sustainably farmed Oakville Estate and select longstanding grower partners, the Cabernet Sauvignon was night-harvested, hand sorted by cluster, destemmed, mechanically sorted, and crushed before fermentation in small, temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks over 7 to 10 days at an average of 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Following pressing and settling, the wine was transferred to a mix of new and second-fill French oak barrels for 19 months of aging. The final blend is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, with 45% new French oak.
The 2022 Groth Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant wine that opens with a deep purple-ruby hue and a refined bouquet of toffee, blueberry pie, and raspberry compote, layered with vanilla bean, macerated cranberry, and shortcrust pastry, with herbal notes of bay leaf and tarragon adding complexity. On the palate, vibrant cherry reduction, tart red plum, wild cherry, and fresh strawberry take center stage, while hints of dried herbs, tobacco leaf, and pomegranate juice bring depth and intrigue. The finish is structured and lively, with fine, grippy tannins. A natural companion to grilled ribeye, roasted lamb chops, or roast duck, as well as risotto with fresh herbs, pasta carbonara, and aged cheeses like Gruyere, Gouda, or blue cheese.
