Description
Günther Steinmetz Wintricher Geierslay GW Riesling Trocken
Weingut Günther Steinmetz is a fifth-generation family estate rooted in the village of Brauneberg in the heart of the Middle Mosel. Founded in the early 1900s, the winery spans roughly 13 hectares of steep, slate-rich hillside vineyards across some of the region’s most celebrated sites. Stefan Steinmetz, who has led the estate since 1999 alongside his wife Sammie, follows a philosophy of minimal intervention, relying on hand-harvested fruit, spontaneous fermentation, and zero additives to let each vineyard speak for itself. The “GW” designation stands for Grosses Wintricher, Stefan’s own classification for his finest dry Riesling from the Geierslay site in Wintrich, a quiet, south-facing side valley defined by layered purple slate and quartzite.
The 2019 vintage in the Mosel delivered exceptional conditions for dry Riesling, with a long, warm growing season that built concentration and ripeness while the region’s cool nights preserved freshness and structure. Yields were naturally low, pushing intensity into each cluster and producing wines of notable depth and aging potential.
The Geierslay vineyard, planted with vines over 60 years old, produces a wine that is simultaneously powerful and precise. The nose opens with an almost electric mineral quality, followed by stone fruit, fresh herbs, and a bright herbal lift. On the palate it is focused and finely textured, with vivid acidity threading through layers of ripe fruit and a stony backbone that cascades through to a long, mineral-driven finish. Rated 97 points by James Suckling, this is a wine of serious pedigree and real aging potential.
