Description
Juan Gil Honoro Vera Monastrell
Bodegas Juan Gil has been rooted in the sun-baked soils of southeastern Spain since 1916, building a reputation as one of the most respected producers in the Jumilla region. Part of the larger Grupo Juan Gil Bodegas Familiares family of wineries, the Honoro Vera label was born from a desire to showcase the raw power and personality of organically farmed Monastrell at an exceptional everyday value. The result is a wine that delivers far more than its price suggests, vintage after vintage.
The vineyards behind Honoro Vera are planted on nutrient-poor limestone and chalky soils with no irrigation, forcing vines to dig deep and produce small, intensely concentrated clusters of fruit. The climate is a study in extremes, with frigid winters giving way to blazing summers where temperatures can soar past 100 degrees. This dramatic range between seasons, combined with the dry, arid conditions and continental climate shaped by Mediterranean influences, is precisely what makes the Monastrell grape thrive here.
D.O. Jumilla
Located in the Murcia region of southeastern Spain, Jumilla is one of the Iberian Peninsula’s oldest and most distinctive wine appellations. Long celebrated as the spiritual home of the Monastrell grape, this rugged, high-altitude plateau benefits from an exceptionally dry climate, rocky limestone soils, and an abundance of sunshine that yields bold, deeply colored red wines with remarkable fruit concentration, floral character, and natural freshness.
Tasting Notes
Honoro Vera Monastrell pours a vivid cherry red and opens with an inviting nose of ripe red and black fruits, violet florals, and a fresh menthol lift. On the palate it is medium-bodied and generous, with lively flavors of plum, dark berry, and a touch of licorice, balanced by bright acidity and smooth, refined tannins. The finish is clean, persistent, and satisfying. A wonderfully versatile wine at the table, pairing beautifully with grilled meats, game, mushroom dishes, stewed vegetables, and aged or smoked cheeses.
