Leone De Castris Five Roses Rosé
Leone de Castris is one of Puglia’s most storied wine estates, based in Salice Salentino in the heel of Italy’s boot. The estate holds a unique place in Italian wine history as the producer of Five Roses, the first rosé wine ever commercially bottled in Italy. First released in 1943, Five Roses remains the estate’s iconic expression and a benchmark for southern Italian rosé, made from Negroamaro, the indigenous grape variety that has defined the wines of Salento for centuries. Today, Leone de Castris continues to combine this proud heritage with precise, modern winemaking across their extensive estate vineyards.
Five Roses is crafted from 20-year-old Negroamaro vines, trained on the traditional Cordon Spur system at a density of 5,500 vines per hectare. The grapes are harvested in early September and undergo a carefully controlled skin maceration at 10°C for a few hours, extracting the wine’s signature crystalline cherry-pink colour while preserving delicate aromatics. The free-run must is then fermented in stainless-steel tanks at 16-20°C before a minimum of two months ageing on steel, followed by one month of bottle rest. The result is a wine of freshness, purity, and immediate charm.
