Mommessin Gamay Noir
Mommessin – The House & Its Heritage
A unique fusion of two wine cultures
Founded in 1865 at Grange‑Saint‑Pierre, a former outbuilding of the Abbey of Cluny, Mommessin began under Jean‑Marie Mommessin in southern Burgundy. In 1932, the acquisition of the prestigious Clos de Tart solidified their presence in Burgundy. A century later, the company relocated its headquarters to Quincié‑en‑Beaujolais, combining Burgundian heritage with the vibrancy of Beaujolais.
Burgundy soul, Beaujolais spirit
Mommessin wines embody the elegance and finesse of Burgundy along with the expressive, fruit-forward style of Beaujolais. This blend of traditions defines their distinctive character.
Vineyard expertise & philosophy
Operating as both vineyard and cellar, embodied in their term “viniculteur”, the winemaker oversees every step from vine to bottle. Led by Florent Georger, this approach honors traditional Burgundian standards while staying deeply rooted in Beaujolais terroir.
Viticulture & winemaking principles
Mommessin embraces rigorous vine selection, parcel-specific farming, and a strong partnership with grower-vignerons. They emphasize sustainable vineyard practices, minimizing chemical usage and carefully controlling yields to preserve quality and terroir expression.
The essence of their identity
Three guiding principles, Excellence, Respect, Transparency, underscore every step: from vineyard sourcing and harvest to fermentation, aging, and bottling. Their wines reflect both ecological sensitivity and regional authenticity.
Mommessin Gamay Noir is a vibrant ruby-red wine with beautiful clarity. On the nose, it offers fruity and floral aromas, dominated by small red berries, especially Morello cherry, with subtle spicy notes. The palate is well-balanced, combining fruitiness and structure with elegant touches of spice and softness. Made primarily from white-juiced Gamay Noir with a hint of Syrah, the grapes are sourced from granite-based terroirs in regions like Beaujolais and Comté Tolosan. Vinified using traditional Beaujolais semi-carbonic maceration and aged in vats without oak, the wine expresses fresh, lively character. Best served slightly chilled at 13–15 °C, it pairs wonderfully with charcuterie, grilled meats, casual meals, and soft cheeses. This wine is best enjoyed young to capture its full aromatic expression.
