Numanthia Termes Red
About the Producer
Founded in 1998, Bodega Numanthia is located in Valdefinjas, Castile and León, in the northwest of Spain. The bodega takes its name from the Numantinos, an ancient Celtic community whose inhabitants heroically resisted the Roman army for 20 years in 134 B.C., and that same spirit of resilience runs through everything they do. The Toro region has a winemaking history stretching back centuries, and its vines are famously tough survivors: Toro wines were among the first in the world to travel to the Americas, carried on Christopher Columbus’ ships in 1492, and the region’s vines withstood the phylloxera plague that devastated most of Europe’s vineyards in the 19th century. Some of Numanthia’s ungrafted bush vines are up to 200 years old, and the entire estate has been certified organic since 2020.
Terroir
Bodega Numanthia’s vineyard spans 200 hectares across the communes of Toro, Morales de Toro, Valdefinjas, Venialbo, El Pego, and Argujillo, with over 200 individual parcels on either side of the Duero River. The vines grow in sandy and rocky soils, developing deep roots of up to 5 meters without any irrigation, and must endure a punishing climate famously described as “nine months of winter, three months of hell.” Each parcel is vinified separately before being carefully blended by the winemaking team, drawing on eight distinct terroir types to create a wine with a unique balance of elegance and power.
Tasting notes
Termes pours a deep cherry red with ruby reflections, clean, bright, and inviting in the glass. On the nose, rich aromas of ripe blackberries and dark fruit emerge, layered with hints of spice, tobacco leaf, eucalyptus, and aromatic herbs. The palate is full-bodied and expressive, delivering flavors of dark fruit, cinnamon, cedar, violets, and a cool whisper of menthol, with soft, velvety tannins and bright acidity keeping everything in balance. The finish is long, expressive, and satisfying.
