Description
Paitin “Serra” Barbera d’Alba DOC
Every year the roots go deeper, and every year the fruit mirrors this lasting bond. In the same way every year green arms sprawl out to give a renewed original character to the fruit. An equilibrium among persistence in the character and talent of variability. This is nature’s verb. The understanding of this verb resides in farmer’s experience. To know all the shades of its own vineyards and the wisdom to react at their mutations. The grower establishes an empathic connection with everything around them. This fragile sensibility can only be learnt persevering through generations. Accomplished by knowledge handed down from father to son.
Serra is the name our family since long time has assigned to the fresher and more delicate slope of the Serraboella. Historically voted for great Barbera. More evolved soils, richer, less dry, in a more closed and fresh valley, gives origin to rigorous wine, full but never opulent and balanced in their freshness. From some years now, in the Serra we do not have only Neive grapes but also a small portion comes from the Rivoli region of Alba.
Vinification and Viticulture
This Barbera d’Alba is produced from 100% Barbera grapes grown in the Langhe, specifically in Serraboella di Neive and Rivoli di Alba, with vineyards planted in 1980 and trained using the Guyot system. The sites range from east-facing slopes in Serraboella at 280–320 meters above sea level to west-facing parcels in Rivoli, with grapes sourced from clay-rich soils and marly limestone of the Marne di Sant’Agata fossili sabbiose. Viticulture is organic, relying solely on natural sulphur and copper compounds, with manual or mechanical mowing instead of herbicides, and harvesting carried out entirely by hand. Vinification follows a consistent philosophy, with the grapes pressed and destemmed before fermenting and macerating for two weeks in stainless steel, then transferred at the end of winter to Slavonian oak barrels aged around 15 years, where the wine matures for one year in vessels ranging from 10 to 25 hectoliters.
Tasting Notes
Paitin “Serra” Barbera d’Alba DOC Notes To Your Senses:
- APPEARANCE: Deep ruby with violet reflections, bright and energetic in the glass.
- AROMA: Lifted and precise, opening with sour cherry, red plum, and wild raspberry. Subtle notes of dried rose, crushed stone, and a hint of sweet spice emerge with air, reflecting the cooler exposures and clay-limestone soils
- TASTE: Medium-bodied and vividly fresh, driven by Barbera’s natural acidity. Juicy red fruit leads, framed by fine, powdery tannins. The texture is firm yet fluid, never heavy, with a savory mineral undertone that keeps the wine taut and focused
- FINISH: Clean and persistent, marked by bright cherry, gentle herbal tones, and a stony, refreshing close
- ABV: 14.5%
