Description
Quinta do Infantado Douro Tinto
Quinta do Infantado was founded in 1816 in the Douro’s prestigious Cima Corgo sub-region by Portuguese crown heir D. Pedro IV. The Roseira family have owned the estate since the late 19th century, with third-generation João Roseira now leading winemaking and vineyard management across 46 hectares of exclusively A-grade vineyards, the Douro’s equivalent of grand cru.
In the 1970s, Infantado made a radical move, becoming the first Douro estate to bottle exclusively estate-grown wines rather than selling to large shippers. When Portuguese law prevented them from exporting, they held firm, and when Portugal joined the EU in 1986, the world finally got access to their wines.
Their vineyards are classic steep, terraced, old-vine parcels planted with around fifteen traditional local varieties on schistous soils. Rather than producing fully sweet Port, Infantado crafts a rarer meio-seco (medium-dry) style, fermenting their well-ripened fruit further to achieve greater complexity, less sugar, and around 30% less brandy than a standard Port.
In the cellar, every detail is intentional. Fruit is harvested into small boxes and rushed to the nearby winery, then fermented slowly over three to four days using only natural yeasts in open tanks, a combination of traditional foot-treading and modern mechanics. Aging takes place in a range of old wooden casks, preserving the wines’ character and balance.
Sourced from a vineyard planted to Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz; this site has been farmed organically since it was planted in 1998. The fruit is partially destemmed, then foot-trodden, as has been the tradition here since 1816. Fermentation is in done in lagar, and malolactic is in tank. The wine is aged 7 months in tank and 10 months in French oak barrels of various origins and ages.
Quinta do Infantado Douro Tinto opens with intense aromas of raspberries, ripe plums, and blueberries, lifted by subtle notes of cloves, vanilla, and earthy undertones. On the palate, rich raspberry, black cherry, and plum take center stage, complemented by savory leather and tobacco undertones, balanced tannins, and a velvety texture that carries through to a long, succulent finish with lingering dark fruit and balanced acidity.
