Description
Ratti Battaglione Barbera D’Asti DOCG
In the rolling, vine-covered hills of Piedmont, where the Langhe and Monferrato landscapes have shaped Italian wine culture for centuries, the Ratti estate stands as one of the region’s most respected and historically significant addresses. Founded by the visionary Renato Ratti, whose influence on Piedmontese wine culture extended far beyond the cellar, the estate at Frazione Annunziata in La Morra has long been dedicated to expressing the full nobility of the varieties that call this extraordinary corner of northern Italy home. It was Renato Ratti who in 1973 created the iconic Albeisa bottle, named for the city of Alba, as a way of asserting the uniqueness of this territory and its wines, a gesture that speaks volumes about the depth of his commitment to place, identity, and legacy.
The Battaglione takes its name and its striking label from the heroic Piedmontese military regiments of the 18th century, a tribute as bold and full of character as the wine itself. Crafted from 100% Barbera sourced in part from the estate’s own vineyards at Villa Pattono in Costigliole d’Asti and in part from carefully selected parcels across the Asti hills, this is a wine of genuine substance and personality. Grapes are hand-harvested in September before destemming and pressing, with alcoholic fermentation carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel and an extended skin contact of approximately two weeks to build depth, color, and structure. Malolactic fermentation in steel further rounds and integrates the wine, producing a Barbera that is rich, structured, and well suited to medium aging.
The Ratti Battaglione pours a deep, intense ruby red with the kind of saturated, inky color that commands attention from the very first pour. The nose is generous and layered, ripe dark fruit leads the charge with blackberry, plum, and cherry, woven through with an inviting background of warm spice that adds complexity and character without ever overshadowing the grape’s natural vibrancy. On the palate it is full-flavored, structured, and confidently built, rich fruit flavors fill the mid-palate with a pleasant roundness and elegance, the Barbera’s characteristic freshness keeping everything lively and in balance, while the wine’s firm framework hints at the rewarding development that awaits with a few years of careful cellaring. The finish is long and persistent, fading with a warm, spiced depth that makes it a natural and satisfying companion to hearty pasta dishes and roasted red meats.
