Description
Tarapacá Gran Reserva Carmenere
Founded in 1874, Viña Tarapacá stands as one of Chile’s oldest and most storied wineries, carrying with it a century and a half of experience, passion, and deep-rooted tradition in Chilean viticulture. At the heart of their philosophy lies an unwavering commitment to protecting the rich biodiversity of their vineyard, a rare natural clos nestled in the prestigious Maipo Valley. This extraordinary ecosystem, shaped by generations of careful stewardship, breathes life and unparalleled character into every bottle they produce.
The journey from vine to glass is one of patience and precision. After destemming, the grapes are transferred to stainless steel tanks where a long, deliberate pre-fermentative maceration of up to 72 hours unfolds at a cool 10-12°C, gently coaxing out the vibrant anthocyanins and aromatic complexity that define this wine. During alcoholic fermentation, strong, short, and frequent pump-overs are performed in small fermentation tanks, drawing out a rich concentration of tannins and color. Select lots then undergo an extended post-fermentative maceration of up to 20 days, deepening the wine’s structure and soul. Finally, 80% of the wine is lovingly aged in French oak for 10 months, while the remaining 20% rests in stainless steel, preserving the wine’s vibrant primary fruit and ensuring a beautifully balanced final blend.
The result is a wine of striking beauty and elegance. Intense ruby red with alluring purple highlights, this Carmenere seduces from the first pour with an expressive and spiced nose of blackberry, cassis, almonds, and vanilla, while characteristic pyrazinic notes weave through with intriguing depth and complexity. On the palate it is smooth, enveloping, and gloriously velvety, with soft yet grippy tannins leading to a long, satisfying finish. A natural companion to creamy pasta dishes, rich fish such as tuna and salmon, and garden-fresh vegetables.
