Description
Tarapacá Gran Reserva Merlot
Founded in 1874, Viña Tarapacá stands as one of Chile’s oldest and most storied wineries, carrying with it a century and a half of experience, passion, and deep-rooted tradition in Chilean viticulture. At the heart of their philosophy lies an unwavering commitment to protecting the rich biodiversity of their vineyard, a rare natural clos nestled in the prestigious Maipo Valley. This extraordinary ecosystem, shaped by generations of careful stewardship, breathes life and unparalleled character into every bottle they produce.
The Merlot grapes for this Gran Reserva are sourced from select plots within the estate best suited to the variety, harvested at peak ripeness in April. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes are destemmed and crushed before fermentation unfolds over 7 to 10 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving the fresh, fruit-forward character the variety is known for. Following fermentation, 60% of the wine is aged for 10 months in French oak, lending structure, depth, and a gentle layer of vanilla and spice, while the remaining 40% rests in stainless steel to protect its vibrant primary fruit and contribute freshness to the final blend. The wine is not clarified before bottling, keeping its full natural character intact.
The result is a wine of warmth, richness, and approachable elegance. Deep ruby red in the glass, the Merlot opens with inviting aromas of ripe cherries, plum, pomegranate, and cranberry, woven through with notes of spice and vanilla from its time in French oak. On the palate it is full, harmonious, and satisfying, with ripe tannins, good structure, and plenty of fresh fruit tones balanced by a soft, lingering finish. A natural companion to beef, lamb, veal, and hearty meat dishes.
