Description
Terra D’Oro Petite Sirah
Terra d’Oro was established in 1970 by Cary Gott, becoming the first winery in Amador County after Prohibition and quickly earning recognition for its rich Zinfandels and Italian varietals that helped revive the region’s reputation for fine wine. In 1988, the Trinchero family acquired the winery and its vineyards, later building a modern winemaking facility to showcase the quality of their estate fruit. Today, Terra d’Oro farms more than 800 acres of vineyards across Amador County and Clarksburg AVA, continuing its focus on sustainable farming and expressive wines.
The name Terra d’Oro, meaning “land of gold,” reflects both the Gold Rush history of the Sierra foothills and the Italian heritage of early settlers who planted vineyards in the region’s volcanic and granite soils. After decades of decline following Prohibition, the founding of Terra d’Oro helped reestablish Amador County as a respected winegrowing area, honoring its past while producing wines that showcase the depth and character of the land.
Two different clones go into our Petite Sirah blend. The plantings consist of 50% Clone 3 and 50% Clone 6. Clone 3 is a common clone in California, expressing aromatics of blueberry and violets with a tannin structure that is more delicate for Petite Sirah. Clone 6 expresses big robust tannins, a deep opaque purple hue and aromatics of wet stone, salinity, and olives. The fragile grape clusters were handpicked at first light, de-stemmed and partially crushed, leaving whole berries for fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The fermenting grapes were pumped-over daily to enhance the extraction of vivid color, flavor and aroma. After settling, the wine was aged in 15% new American oak barrels for 14 months before bottling.
