Description
Sella And Mosca Cannonau Di Sardegna Riserva
Founded in 1899, Sella and Mosca is one of Sardinia’s most storied and celebrated wine estates. Located in Alghero on the island’s rugged northwest coast, the property spans over 500 hectares of vineyards and constitutes the second largest contiguous vineyard in all of Italy. From the very beginning, the estate has been committed to a single principle: growing indigenous Sardinian grapes on Sardinian soil, making wines that could only come from this place.
Cannonau is Sardinia’s soul grape, thriving in the island’s hot, dry conditions and deeply embedded in its culture. Archaeological evidence dating back to 1200 BCE confirms it as a variety indigenous to the island, widely believed to be the original grape that later traveled to Spain under the name Garnacha during the period of Aragonese rule. Sella and Mosca’s Riserva is aged for a minimum of two years before release, a portion of that time spent in oak, adding structure and complexity while preserving the grape’s natural warmth and vivacity.
A brilliant ruby red with garnet hues, the 2020 Riserva opens with a complex and inviting nose of blackberry, dark cherry, lavender, dried violet, and sage, with deeper notes of tobacco, chocolate, and earthy depth. On the palate the wine is medium to full bodied with firm, creamy tannins and a core of vibrant acidity. Ripe wild berries, blackcurrant, and plum are woven together with balsamic herbs, warming spice, and a lingering touch of licorice. The finish is long, polished, and pleasantly chewy.
